What: Learning students' names early on in the semester so you are able to address them all by name.
How: You can have students introduce themselves and say something about why they are taking the class to help you make associations between names and faces. If you anticipate having trouble learning names, you can have students make name cards. This is especially helpful in bigger classes, but can even be used in a small class.
Why: Addressing students by name, and having them address each other by name helps to build a cohesive and comfortable community from the beginning of the semester. If all students are addressed by name, they will also begin to feel that they are being personally recognized for their contributions in the class.
