What: Gathering mid-semester feedback from students by asking questions that allow students to reflect on their experiences thus far. While framing questions for mid-semester feedback you might want to think about what feedback would be helpful to you, and what aspects of the class you are willing to tweak. It can be discouraging for students to be asked about an aspect of the class that cannot be changed.

How: You can create a hard copy questionnaire that you allow students to complete during class time, to ensure the maximum response rate. Some examples of questions based on ones we used this semester are:

In what ways do you feel your professor supports your learning?

In what ways do you feel like you support your own learning in this class? If anything, what might you do differently moving forward?

In what ways do you engage best with the class material (eg: books, articles, moodle readings etc.)? Do you feel better able to engage with some kinds of material?

In what ways do your classmates support your learning in this class? Do you see any ways they might support or challenge you differently?

Why: Asking for students' feedback can give you a sense of how students are experiencing the class and how you can better support them through the rest of the semester. This is also a chance for students to reflect on the semester thus far, and perhaps think of ways they might support their own learning in a different way. This is a chance to not only hear about what things you might do differently, but it is also a chance to hear affirmation about the aspects of the class that are helpful and productive.
