What: In addition to reiterating expectations for the students, it is helpful to check in with students to see what support they need from you, or from other resources to successfully complete the semester.

How: This can take the form of in-class, small group discussions where students can figure out what support they need, and then report back to you. This might also be an independent activity where students can reflect on their own and share in writing what they need to complete the semester.

Why: This is a helpful activity because it makes sure the effort you are putting in to help students succeed is in line with the support they are hoping to get.
